04/05/2007 - One of world's top sellers but US bans it

AULIN is one of the most commonly prescribed painkillers in Ireland - despite the fact that it has never been sold in the US where it failed to receive a Food and Drug Administration certificate.

Aulin or Nimesulide is part of a broad family of painkillers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). It proved effective in treating chronic joint problems, such as osteoarthritis where, unlike members of the NSAID family, it did not cause intestinal bleeding.

It became a noted treatment for chronic arthritis pain - and many users reported relief where ordinary analgesic painkillers had proven unsuccessful.

Launched on the Italian market in 1985, from the very beginning the drug was known to have potential side-effects for the liver. Aulin first went on sale in Ireland in 1995. But because of the known side-effects, Aulin was never marketed in places such as the US, the UK and Australia.

Several countries which once allowed sales of the drug have now banned its prescription because of concerns over liver damage in patients.

However, Aulin is still ranked as one of the world's top-five-selling anti-inflammatory drugs.
